Affectionately known as the searmaster by his friends, William “Bill” Best has forever reshaped outdoor cooking. Alongside his wife, Rachel, Bill has grown Thermal Engineering Corporation (TEC) since its beginnings in the 1960s to a nationwide leader in infrared grilling technology. Together, they’re dedicated to crafting top-tier grilling products for all grilling enthusiasts!

In 1960, Bill leveraged his expertise in mechanical engineering and thermal dynamics—developed while he served in the Air Force as a refueling system engineer—to pursue another passion. Bill’s work ethic and education laid the groundwork for what would later become TEC Grills, marking the beginning of a journey toward revolutionizing outdoor cooking.

Bill earned his engineering degree from the University of South Carolina, later going on to earn a doctorate in mechanical engineering. There, he specialized in heat transfer and thermal dynamics through a co-op program offered by his employer, aerospace manufacturer Pratt and Whitney. Bill’s time working on guidance rockets at Pratt and Whitney inspired his idea for an infrared burner that could be used as an energy-efficient industrial space heater. And, before long, that burner became his very first patented design.

What began as an inspired experiment eventually turned into a business venture that set the foundation for TEC today. TEC’s first grill was officially sold in 1978. From then on, TEC has earned a national reputation and positioned itself as a top grill in the market.

Unlike traditional gas grills, TEC Grills has made a name for itself with unique infrared technology. This allows users to reach maximum cooking temperatures in just 10-15 minutes, with the added benefit of moisture retention on meat, bread, and more!

TEC would not be where it is today without Rachel Best. She actively manages day-to-day operations at the South Carolina-based manufacturing plant, ensuring a successful production line and the best for TEC’s clients. South Carolina’s heritage runs deep through TEC’s foundation, as every grill is designed and assembled in Columbia, South Carolina.
